Washed cotton calico is a plain-woven, medium-weight textile made entirely from natural, unbleached cotton. This traditional raw calico is known for its rough, unfinished state, often retaining tiny, dark flecks of cotton seeds and husks woven directly into the cloth. The "washed" designation means the fabric has undergone a commercial laundering process after being woven. This crucial step removes the sizing (starches) used during manufacturing, dramatically altering the fabric from a stiff, rigid cloth into a soft, relaxed, and highly workable material while preserving its earthy, rustic charm.

• Softened Texture: Raw calico is notoriously stiff and scratchy. The washing process breaks down the fibers and removes industrial starches, resulting in a textile that is soft to the touch and comfortable against the skin.
• Pre-Shrunk Stability: Untreated cotton shrinks significantly during its first wash. By purchasing washed calico, the initial, severe shrinkage has already occurred, meaning the fabric is stable and will hold its size and shape much better in future home launderings.
• Plain Weave Construction: It utilizes a simple "one-over, one-under" weaving technique. This makes the fabric structurally sound, highly durable, and very easy to cut and sew without unraveling aggressively.
• Blank Canvas: Its natural, absorbent, and un-coated state makes it the perfect foundational fabric for absorbing dyes, paints, and block prints.
