Needlecraft embroidery fabric, often called ground fabric, serves as the essential base material onto which decorative stitching is applied. Its choice is crucial as it directly impacts the appearance, texture, and technical execution of any embroidery project, from a simple monogram to an intricate pictorial scene.

• Weight and Stability: The fabric needs enough weight and stability to support the density of the stitches without puckering, stretching, or losing its shape. Thinner fabrics often require a stabiliser or interfacing applied to the back for added strength.
  
• Canvas: A stiff, open-weave mesh material used specifically for Needlepoint (or tapestry), which often uses heavier threads like wool to completely cover the fabric.
• Stiff Finish: Some fabrics, such as Aida cloth, may be treated with a sizing agent (starch or resin) to make them stiffer. This stiffness is desirable as it reduces the need for a hoop and makes counting threads easier.
